So far, I never tried @couchsurfing as a source to find travel companions. In the past week, I was able to find two great matches in a row. With the first group, we hiked through central Oaxaca for three days, staying in the homes of hospitable locals. From yesterday to today, I explored this waterfall with Sohe (@colombianaperdida). She suggested that we can spend the night there in a tent that someone gifted to her. Unfortunately, none of us had any other camping equipment like a mat, let alone a sleeping bag. Nonetheless, we decided to just go for it. We pitched our tent on a small island in the river right under the waterfall. Such a wonderful view! Turned out, we could rent blankets at the entry. We got one to use as a mat, and the other to cover us. In the evening, we could watch how many birds flew into the holes/caves behind the waterfall. 🐦 They were chirping all night long. Sohe also succeeded in setting up a camp fire for us. Thank you so much for making this possible, Sohe! 💕

I like to challenge myself and this time it involved the country I wanted to visit after the end of my exchange.

[Side note: I completed my semester abroad in Canada last week. All exams are done woopwoop.]

My wish for a destination was that it was gonna be warmer than 20 degrees Celsius. (I’m not a fan of winter unless there’s some pretty snow.) The challenge I set myself was that I wanted to reach this place without using an airplane. Just to see if it was possible.

Fast forward: I reached Mexico City by road.
🇲🇽
Coming from Europe, crossing two countries doesn’t seem a big issue. Talking about North America, I covered more than 5,300 km from Kelowna, B.C. to Mexico City. It took me a week on the road, but this is also because it included camping with friends in Nevada.

HOW DID I MAKE THIS TRIP HAPPEN? As always, it’s a lot about networking and researching online.

I randomly talked to a friend about his plans for Christmas. He said he was driving to Nevada. WAIT WHAT? That‘s halfway where I want to go to!!
What‘s more, he was going with his camper van. I had always wanted to travel in a camper van, so I knew this was my calling. Luckily, he was eager to find a travel companion so he didn’t need much convincing to take me along.

For the second leg of the trip, I assumed it would be cheapest to take a bus from inside Mexico. I was able to find a direct bus from Tijuana to Mexico City. I‘d like to add that as usual, I did everything last minute, so I booked the bus less than 48 hours before departure, and it cost me just 90 USD for 35 hours of bus ride.

To reach to Tijuana, I took another bus from Las Vegas to the US-Mexican border in San Ysidro and walked across the border on foot.

The whole journey was such joy for me. First, it was a beautiful experience to not be connected via internet, etc. (#digitaldetox). Leaving everyone I know behind, meant that I had two silent days for myself on the bus, which I honored.

Second, I enjoyed seeing the landscape change: from snowy landscapes to large plains, a rocky desert, palm trees, rain showers, and green hills. I also appreciated sunrises, sunsets, and stars. BEAUTIFUL EXPERIENCE! 🙌🏻🌈✨

ANGELS I never talk about my dad. I don’t even emotionally associate anything with a „dad“. When I talk about my family, I talk about my mum and my sister. My father died in an accident many years ago before my memory was able to store any sort of pictures of him. Nonetheless, my heart knows that he was there and he took a piece of it when he never returned. Two years ago, my mum joined my father in eternity. I now have to talk about her in the past tense although my memories of her are very much alive. My rational mind doesn’t believe in an hereafter, but I do get the strong feeling of my mother backing me and looking over my shoulders at times. I still cry about her loss. There are certain events that trigger it, like people giving a speech about their struggles growing up, health conditions or losses of friends/relatives, or calling the ancestors in a ceremony. Grief doesn’t end after a year or two, it‘s persistent and it comes back in cycles (see 2nd and 3rd photo). Imagine a strong tree standing on a beautiful land, and now imagine cutting the roots of that tree. What is that tree gonna do? It’s gonna fall. You can carry it around and plant it somewhere else, but it’s not gonna be the same lush tree anymore and it will take a long, long time to put down roots again. This is me not knowing where my home is. And this is me feeling lost in this big world and not knowing where to put down my roots. People keep asking if I am looking forward for Christmas. Christmas is a family celebration, and I just feel like I don’t have one, so the Christmas time also brings along sadness and has certainly lost importance for me. The reason I share this with you today is to break the silence of keeping painful emotions to yourselves. My losses are part of my story and the reason why I am how I am. I want to let you know that it is okay to not be okay. And I want to encourage you to share these feelings with others and to let them know what is on your mind. 🙏

🇻🇳 VIETNAM Who of you have been to Vietnam? And who has heard of Hà Giang, the Northern most province of Vietnam? It takes definitely some time to reach but is totally worth the visit, says @_charlotteluise. She and her boyfriend @darrasito explored the remote province on a scooter for 4 days. 🛵 Charlotte tells her experience now up on the blog (👉🏻 @exploreronabudget link in bio). „You need a lot of mud protection, a desire to move on tiny, undulating roads by scooter (which can sometimes lead to quite imaginative falls) and above all, an approximate understanding of how beautiful the region is (even if all expectations are completely exceeded!).“

When you feel stuck in your life, or in your study mind, or on your campus, change your backdrop. 🌅
Went to Vancouver for the weekend and enjoyed not having to think about the upcoming exams. The university life in Canada is different from what I’m used to in Germany. First, the Canadian system requires a lot more dedication and work during the semester (assignments or readings due almost every week). Second, the final examination here doesn’t count 100%. You’re more likely to have collected over half of your grade during the semester (through participation, assignments, quizzes, midterms, reflections, essays, ...). Third, the instructors seem to enjoy teaching and sharing their knowledge and conversing with students in office hours. Plus, you can call them by their first name. In Germany, I experienced many instructors to be rather reserved concerning students, unwilling to explain simple or more complex concepts if they notice that you’re missing some gaps from previous lectures, courses or even high-school. They prefer working on their own research projects than doing the (mandatory) teaching. You will address them formally with their title. I wish everyone success in their exams the coming weeks! 🍀 You can do it!
